In case you haven’t heard, WWE will have the first-ever all-women’s pay-per-view event on Sunday October 28th. My predictions for the matches that are set are here.
Smackdown Women’s Championship match – Last Woman Standing Match
For the first time ever, at the first-ever all-women’s pay-per-view (so many firsts!) we get to see a Last Woman Standing match between Becky Lynch (c) and Charlotte Flair. This friendship turned bitter rivalry has centered around this championship since SummerSlam. With Becky’s supportive fans and Charlotte’s unmatched physicality in the ring, this will be quite the match to behold. Let’s just hope WWE lets it go for 45 minutes to 1 hour.
My prediction is that Becky retains, finally getting to brag that she is the better woman with a memorable match to back it up. Don’t hold your breath though, this will not be your main-event.
Raw Women’s Championship match
Folks, here is your main-event. Nikki Bella and Ronda Rousey (c) have been at each-other, at least verbally, over the past few weeks. Ronda Rousey cut her best promo yet against Nikki Bella, pointing mostly to her failed relationship with John Cena. But besides getting Ronda in the position to draw mainstream attention, there is really not much going for this match.
Since Nikki and Brie have not committed to a full-time schedule, it is pretty much a foregone conclusion that Ronda will retain. So, for me, this match is less about bringing Nikki back into the fray and more about accelerating Ronda as a fighting champion. This keeps her in the top spot for a while and keeps all eyes on the WWE’s women’s division.
NXT Women’s Championship
As someone who does not watch NXT, I am pretty excited for this match. I like the idea of mixing the divisions. And, I know that NXT is known for being a much more physical group compared to the main roster which focuses more on their story-lines. Kairi Sane (c) won the first Mae Young Classic and defeated Shayna Baszler for the NXT Championship. Now, we will have a rematch between the two for the championship. With the little of the story I’ve seen, I predict Shayna will win it back.
2018 Mae Young Classic finals
A new set of eyes will be on the Mae Young Classic as Toni Storm faces Io Shirai in this final match-up of the competition. Without much to go on, I make no predictions for this one.
Trish and Lita v. Mickie and Alexa – Tag Team match
As of yesterday, WWE.com reports that Alexa Bliss will not compete in this tag-team match due to an injury. WWE.com reports, “although James was originally slated to team with Alexa Bliss, The Goddess will not compete due to an injury, and will be replaced by the wily Fox in this blockbuster match-up. The cunning Bliss will still be present in Mickie & Alicia’s corner.” They do not explain what her injury is. Since her loss to Ronda Rousey at SummerSlam, it seems Alexa has seen a lot less in-ring action. Not being able to compete in this historic event is definitely a blow to any momentum she was building. It also makes you wonder what the severity of the injury is.
While Alexa will not compete, she will accompany Mickie and Alicia ring-side. So it also begs the question, will she get involved to secure the win for her team? Likely not, as I don’t see WWE replacing her for the match but then letting her get physical in the end. However, with this change, I anticipate a Trish and Lita win.
Possible alternate story-line: Let’s get some Women’s Tag-Team Championships fueled by this event!
Sasha Banks, Bayley & Natalya vs. The Riott Squad
According to cbssports.com, this weak feud developed in the last two weeks. The match was added just before this past week’s Monday Night Raw. I’m glad they got these influential women involved in the pay-per-view, though more build would’ve been nice.
Women’s battle royal
The hope with this battle royal is to elevate the winner to a future title match. With the January Royal Rumble just around the corner in terms of wrestling-time, it is hard to say when the champion of this battle royal would get their title-shot. The competitors that have been listed are:
Asuka (first-ever Women’s Royal Rumble Match winner) who has fallen by the wayside since she won that, Naomi (first-even Women’s Battle Royal winner), Carmella, Billie Kay, Peyton Royce, Sonya Deville, Nia Jax, Ember Moon, Mandy Rose, Lana, Dana Brooke, Tamina, Torrie Wilson, Michelle McCool, Alundra Blayze, Ivory, Molly Holly, Kelly Kelly, Maria Kanellis, and Zelina Vega.
Twenty competitors have been named so far. It will be interesting to see if there are any surprises yet to be announced, though I doubt it.
Besides the battle royal announcement, there has not been a large build-up to this event between the competitors. Naomi and Asuka have tagged together against the Iconics. Carmella has Truth-TV. Sonya Deville and Mandy Rose are seen minimally.
Nia Jax and Ember Moon have teamed-up a few times. Dana Brooke split from Titus Worldwide and just returned this week. Tamina has been thrown in there a few times, and Lana is in her story with Rusev and Aiden English.
Zelina Vega has been seen for little more than as valet for Andrade Cien Alman. Torrie Wilson, Michelle McCool, Alundra Blayse, Ivory, Molly Holly, Kelly Kelly, and Maria Kanellis have not been part of any event since WrestleMania 34. This is almost an impossible pick, so I’m going to go with Nia Jax to get her back into championship contention or Ember Moon to propel her to that place.
It is a very exciting time for women’s wrestling and will be a good pay-per-view to watch. With all the build-up, I hope this one really delivers.
