New Year
Hi there fans, we’re back for more in 2020 and we’re starting with the Royal Rumble 2020. WWE’s first pay-per-view event of the year and the kick-off to the road to WrestleMania, When it comes to the Royal Rumble, we all want to talk about surprises. Surprise entrants, surprise matches, or just announcements we weren’t expecting. So as always, with no true authority besides fandom, let’s get to my predictions.
Surprise Entrants
There are still 9 spots that are unconfirmed. Last year’s RR was a bit of a disappointment as the surprises were not true surprises in the sense that we typically think, but NXT call-ups. This year, I think it may be the year of welcome-back entrants. The first pick of surprise I have is John Cena. He’s been away from WWE for a little while with movies and other appearances, so it’d be nice to have him back in the mix before WrestleMania.
My second pick, without any insider information, is CM Punk. He was a little before my time, but there has been some talk of him coming back to wrestling at some point. Whether it’s going to be AEW or WWE, I do think CM Punk will come back, but it may not be in a wrestling capacity.
On the women’s side, I presume there will be some NXT call-ups. Further rumors, which I don’t ever like, are that Ronda Rousey will be coming back. With her recent departure after her contract completion, I wouldn’t see any reason for her to return. But, isn’t that the meaning of the word “surprise.”
Surprise Matches
This is a little bit harder to pick out. I’m not sure if WWE is going to try to shorten their pay-per-views this year after the marathons that we had to endure last year, but so far, only 5 matches besides the rumbles have been announced. We have a Universal Championship match, and both Women’s Championship matches. Roman and Corbin are set for a falls count anywhere match and Sheamus and Shorty G will face-off. And that’s it, so far.
We can assume that the tag teams will have matches, so there’s two more, and maybe one more. I’d have to look back to see how many other matches were announced the week before a pay-per-view. But, we know that changes can occur up until the hour before, so stay tuned for that.
Changes
If there are any changes or updates, tonight and Friday night should and will complete the circle. Stay tuned for that and join us on Sunday at 7 PM ET for the Royal Rumble from Houston, TX!
