With TLC just around the corner, let’s go over the quite recent history of the event and what it actually means.
TLC
TLC stands for tables, ladder, and chairs. The event was first held for the WWE in 2009. Since its inception, it has been held in either October or December and has been split between the two brands (Raw and Smackdown). This year, it’s been moved back to December, replacing Clash of Champions and it is dual-branded. So what makes TLC special?
A popular match format
TLC has become one of the more exciting pay-per-view events to watch simply because of the option to have table, ladder, and chairs in the ring! But, besides that, there are specific “rules” that makes each match a popular format. This year, we have two TLC matches set. Let’s break down what we might see.
For a tables match, the use of a table is a legal weapon. The only way to win is if one opponent must put the other through a table. There is no pinfall and there is no submission.
For a ladder match, an item is held above the ring. Ladders are a legal weapon, but the only way to win is to retrieve the item from above the ring using a ladder.
In a chair match, a chair is a legal weapon and not cause for disqualification if used. Traditional pinfall or submission rules still apply.
In a TLC match then, all of the items are available for use as a weapon, but the match follows ladder rules. With an item, typically a championship, suspended above the ring, the victor must climb the ladder and retrieve the item to be declared the winner.
TLC 2018
So, with the two matches we have coming up for TLC 2018 that are TLC matches, one makes sense and one does not. The Smackdown Live Women’s Championship will be defended by Becky Lynch against two opponents in a TLC match. Asuka, Becky or Charlotte will need to ascend the ladder and grab the championship. In the second bout, Braun Strowman faces Baron Corbin in a TLC match. Braun gets a title shot against Brock if he wins and Baron gets to be full-time Raw GM if he wins. So what’s going to hang above the ring? Guess this one will have some different rules.
