In honor of WWE Survivor Series set for this Sunday, I’m going to do a series on the history of the event from the beginning. From its humble beginnings to what it has become now 31 years later.
It Begins
In 1987, following what was a very successful WrestleMania III, Survivor Series built off of that momentum. Originally created to be a “Thanksgiving tradition,” the event was held either on or the day before Thanksgiving for the first 8 years (1987-1994). Starting in 1995, and pretty much every event since, Survivor Series was held the Sunday before Thanksgiving. Since 2016, with the re-introduction of the brand split, the pay-per-view has centered around two principles. 1. A direct competition is held between the two brands for brand supremacy, and 2. A Survivor Series match will be held.
The Matches
Any number of different matches are seen at a pay-per-view event (which we will get more into in the coming days). But, there is one that stands out. A traditional “Survivor Series” match is a tag-team elimination match between 4-5 wrestlers per team. This year, the traditional match is held with 5 members of the Raw roster against 5 members of the Smackdown roster.
Come back tomorrow when we’ll explore Part 2 of this series covering matches and history of the event.
