After months without seeing the, “reigning,” but definitely not, “defending” Universal champion, we find out last week after a tweet from Kurt Angle that Brock does not want to defend his title against anyone who wins a “multi-man” qualifying match.
Hmm, how very disappointing. But wait a minute. What commitment is Brock Lesnar allowed to back out of (story-line)? Also, no one, at least I didn’t get the impression, thought that Brock Lesnar was going to be at Extreme Rules and defending anything. So, yet again, we get an absent champion who gets to dictate who he will and will not defend the title against. Has anyone else all but forgotten that there is a Universal title? Brock Lesnar has held if for 457 days and counting, which is 65% of the time it has even existed, defended it ten times and retained, and then keeps is under lock-and-key far away from the prying eyes of fans or other superstars who would challenge him for it. And since obtaining it at WrestleMania 33, this is the longest we have gone (almost 4 months) without having it defended.
There are plenty of superstars who would be very deserving of having a title shot and would work well at defending it weekly or AT LEAST monthly. Keeping the Universal title far away from Raw each week is only hurting Raw. I think it’s time that we say goodbye to Brock Lesnar as a champion and allow him to be the badass, dominating attraction that he is.
Let him bring cross-over fans from the MMA world into pro-wrestling and pro-wrestling fans to watch UFC once a year. Let him show up when it’s least expected to put some green talent with too much attitude in their place. But do not, please do not, let him wear the belt any longer. It belittles it. It makes it irrelevant. Allowing the title to be out of sight keeps it out of mind. If it is kept out of mind, the superstars vying for it are just spinning their wheels.
Yes, we all expect to see it a SummerSlam, but that’s not confirmed yet either. And we all know that the intention here keeping the contract a mystery and having Kurt and Paul Heyman state that Brock can do what he wants when he wants it all story. So, were trying to get it to Roman Reigns again. We’re trying yet again to put heat on Brock. But I don’t hate Brock Lesnar. I hate the WWE. I hate that they think this is a good story that keeps wrestling fans intrigued and coming back for me. But it doesn’t. It becomes predictable and, frankly, annoying.
I was there when the crowd turned on another main event with Brock Lesnar and Roman Reigns. It did not hurt Brock. It hurt Roman. Sure, Brock doesn’t like being booed like that, but what was worse, people were ignoring the match entirely. And watching it after Mania, when the crowd was gone and you could see it on the network, it was a really good match. But people didn’t care. And they will continue to not care. It’s time to move on.
Move on from Brock being champ. Move on from trying to get it on Roman in an “organic” way. Let’s all just move on.
