In short, an elimination chamber match is a match where two competitors start inside the ring. Boxes at each corner make up the inner part of the ring enclosure. Every five minutes, one of the boxes on the corners will illuminate, and that competitor will join the match.
How does an elimination chamber work?
An elimination chamber match style features once every February in the WWE. In Germany, the match is called “No Escape.” It is similar to a hell in a cell match because both are held within the confines of a steel cage. The elimination chamber match differs, however, by being a multi-person match.
At the beginning of the match, two competitors start inside the ring. While those two begin, the other competitors wait in boxes surrounding the ring to join the match. Once five minutes pass, a random selector is held over the enclosure for the next competitor to join. In order to win, match rules state that a competitor must eliminate all the other competitors via pinfall or submission. There are no disqualifications.
In practice
In 2002, Triple H created the Elimination Chamber for the WWE. It was introduced on TV by Eric Bischoff. There have been extreme rules Elimination Chambers where each competitor had a weapon and it has been said that the boxes, or pods, on each corner are made of bulletproof glass. Historically, in February 2019, an elimination chamber match will be held to determine the new Women’s Tag Team Titles for the WWE.

Elimination Chamber 2017
The 2017 Elimination Chamber pay-per-view is considered to be a very iconic event for a few different reasons. For one, in the Men’s Elimination Chamber match, Bray Wyatt won to become the new WWE Champion. This win gave Bray the first singles title of his career. Another reason this pay-per-view is highly regarded is that it was the first time three women’s matches were featured on a main card for a pay-per-view. Though 2019’s event will be a dual-branded pay-per-view with Raw and Smackdown Live, 2017’s featured only Smackdown Live superstars.
When does the Elimination Chamber start?
This year’s Elimination Chamber will be held at the Toyota Center in Houston, TX on Sunday, February 17th. Start time for the pre-show/kick-off show starting at 6 PM ET with the main card kicking off at 7 PM ET. You can stream it only on the WWE Network, and new subscribers get it free for the first month of subscription.
