Today, wrestling lost one of the greatest ring announcers and backstage interviewers of all time in “Mean” Gene Okerlund.

Most of his career was spent announcing for the WWF and WCW. Okerlund also spent some time in the ring as a wrestler, once teaming with Hulk Hogan. He actually wasn’t supposed to tag in at all, but the ref mistook a high-five as a tag-in. In the end, Hulk and Gene won by Gene pinning Mr. Fuji.

Besides being the backstage announcer and personality, he sang the national anthem at the first-ever WrestleMania. Another exciting time for Okerlund, as he had no idea he was to do it until moments before. In 2006, Okerlund was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame.

“Mean” Gene’s voice is one of the most recognizable across wrestling, and one of the greats will be greatly missed.
