The Montreal Screwjob was an incident that occurred in the WWF (now WWE) in 1997.  At Survivor Series that year, held in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, Bret Hart was set to face Shawn Michaels for the WWF Championship.

Hart became the WWF Champion at SummerSlam in August of 1997.  In the weeks leading up to Survivor Series, Hart had signed a contract with rival promotion WCW to begin wrestling in December 1997.  WWF promoter Vince McMahon did not want Hart to leave WWF as champion, so he set to have him drop the belt to Michael’s at Survivor Series.  But Hart, performing at home in Montreal, did not want to lose the belt to Michaels.  An agreement was made that the Hart/Michaels match would end in a disqualification, therefore keeping Hart as the champion.  He would then later forfeit the title before departing for WCW.

The Screwjob came when at Survivor Series, Michaels put Hart in Hart’s own signature finishing move, the Sharpshooter. With the help of the referee, the bell got called for even though Hart had not submitted.  Michaels became champion and Hart got screwed.  You can find more about the Montreal Screwjob here and see the execution of it here.
