Week 2 – 2019

The Best

A tribute to “Mean” Gene

With the passing of “Mean” Gene Okerlund last week, we got the announcement that Hulk Hogan was going to be hosting a remembrance of the man.  I have seen plenty of clips of “Mean” Gene over the years, but I didn’t get the privilege of growing up with his unique style and incomparable presence.  The package was excellent and just goes to show that there hasn’t been nor will there ever be someone like Gene Okerlund for wrestling.

Strong Start

Starting the show with a brawl between Bobby Lashley and Seth Rollins and then continuing it throughout was a great way to build this story.  It didn’t seem like the Florida crowd was much into the ending that we got (no spoilers), but in what other way can a story be built up?

Drew wants to fight everyone

Drew McIntyre is a beast and I am really enjoying watching him face off against everyone in the locker room.  I think 2019 will be his year. His package with Cena and then the 6-man with Bobby, Dean, Seth, Finn, and Cena was a really exciting start.  And a good way to get John Cena involved with these men leading into the Royal Rumble.

Tag Team Lumberjack

The Revival has gotten a fair shot over the past few weeks facing off against The Glorious Gable (sorry, I’m not sure what we’re calling them).  But, the matches keep ending in controversy over missed calls and pins. So how do we fix that? We have a lumberjack match. But that doesn’t guarantee a clean fight, as we saw the match end with a 3-count with a foot under the bottom rope.

Women’s Triple Threat Match to end SDL

And boy, did these ladies do some real justice for the women’s division and Smackdown in general. We got false finishes, audible banter, and great promos by all three prior to the match. In the end, The Man, Becky Lynch prevailed. And even her face-to-face with the champ afterwards was a good set for their story going forward.

Other notable match-ups heading towards the Rumble

  • Elias and Corbin – Corbin used to be so irrelevant, but now they are keeping him in a good spot, and Elias is the perfect foil for him
  • Brock and Braun – this face-to-face was really lacking and I’m not getting enough of a battle-feel from it.  All we have is two big guys who both want the belt
  • Ember Moon – damn can that girl hit a finisher, be nice to see her out there for more than 0.2 seconds
  • Miz and Shane are set to face The Bar for the tag team titles
  • Mustafa Ali is amazing to watch; he reminds me a lot of Seth Rollins

The Worst

Moment of Bliss

Let me start by saying I love Alexa Bliss and I miss her in the ring.  That being said, as her first guest, she invites Ronda Rousey on? I don’t think this was a good move.  And then, to make it worse, they didn’t even get in a battle or words themselves. Ronda decides that in her benevolence as the champ, she will offer a title shot to Sasha Banks.  The only partly redeeming part of this segment was that Nia Jax came out to say what we were all thinking.

Daniel Bryan’s snack bar promo

In an attempt to get more heat on Daniel Bryan, he starts the show backstage at the concession stand where he proceeds to throw food in fans faces and call them “impotent.” I don’t mind the new Daniel Bryan, but his cause of all of us ruining this world is just falling flat for me. Redeeming for me: R-Truth laying Bryan out.
