In the world of professional wrestling, “heels” refer to those who play a bad-guy or villain. “Faces” or “babyfaces” are ones who play the good-guy or hero. Typically your heels are portrayed as breaking rules or doing things in matches that would not be legal, hoping not to get caught. Heels may cheat to win. Faces will work to maintain all the rules of the match and win “cleanly”.

In the past, the divide between heels and faces was clear. Faces were well liked and always maintained the standards of matches. Heels were not liked, working hard to get boos from the crowd. In a sense, it was obvious who to root for and who to boo for the crowds. These days, it is not as clear cut. Kayfabe has been blurred, and heels that were once booed are now loved.

People actually like those superstars who can portray a “good heel”. And, most superstars today have been both a heel and a face at some point in their career. Some recent examples of this are Randy Orton, Seth Rollins, and Dean Ambrose.
